Paul Jurgens Foundation Awards
Humanitarian Scholarship for 2003
On May 29, the Paul Jurgens Foundation awarded a $5000 Paul Jurgens Humanitarian
Scholarship to Danielle Felice, a member of the 2003 graduating class at
Division Avenue High School, Levittown, New York. During the Awards Night
Ceremony at the High School, Danielle was
presented the scholarship by Maria Jurgens, widow of Paul Jurgens and
Chairwoman of the Paul Jurgens Foundation and Maria Liotta, Secretary. Also
present at the event were Tony Liotta, Foundation President and MaryAnn
DeBenedetto, Treasurer.
Potential applicants were required to submit an essay that was used as part of the selection criteria for the award. Individuals were then selected for interviews. After reviewing the school careers and involvement in community activities of all the candidates, the Scholarship Committee at Division Avenue High School had little trouble in concluding that Danielle should receive this award.
Danielle has been very active in school activities as well as within the
community. She has volunteered during the school day for the Career Development
gym class by aiding the handicapped students participating in physical education
activities such as basketball and track.
In
addition, Danielle has spent the last three years volunteering during her summer
vacations and on Saturdays working with the disabled kids and adults of
the Town of Hempstead. Danielle stated in her essay " my pride and joy are
the campers that I work with at Camp ANCHOR." ANCHOR stands for Answering the
Needs of Citizens with Handicaps through Organized Recreation.
Danielle truly and admirably exemplifies the qualities that the Foundation seeks
in an individual for honoring with this award. They are the attributes
that we remember Paul Jurgens also had.
Danielle plans to study business while attending St. John's University in the fall.
