THE PAUL JURGENS FOUNDATION
Paul Jurgens, a Police Officer with the Port Authority Police Department, was one of the true heroes of September 11. As thousands were leaving the World Trade Center to seek safety, Paul and other police officers and firefighters ran into the World Trade Center to save others. Many did not return.
Paul’s devotion to his family, the community, and his country were apparent in everything he did. We all miss Paul but there are things we want to do to pay tribute to him and perhaps inspire others. Consistent with this idea, several of his extended family have established a Foundation to honor the life and heroism of Paul Jurgens.
The Paul Jurgens Foundation, Inc. is a NY State corporation and is an IRS approved tax exempt charitable organization as defined in section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code. It has been chartered to perform services that Paul himself would like to have done had he the resources. To date, the Foundation has provided Paul three Jurgens Scholarships, and intends to sponsor children’s athletic programs, and provide contributions to other charitable organizations such as Toys for Tots.
Paul’s wife, Maria, Chairs the Board. In addition to the voting board, there is to be an advisory board of non-voting members. This group will also assist in determining what can be done to honor Paul through the ongoing works of the Paul Jurgens Foundation.
The source of funding for the Foundation is through the generosity of those who can contribute and through fundraising events and outings that will be announced in the near future. We believe that there are many things that can be done to honor Paul. However, the magnitude and impact of these efforts are directly related to the amount of money that is contributed.
A very successful fundraising dinner was held in Paul’s honor on April 20, 2002 in Hicksville, Long Island as was a Golf Outing in October 2002. The second annual Paul Jurgens Golf Outing is also planned for October, 2002, as are other events.
